Phytovolumen sampling in the pilot area before grazing (Alcóntar pilot area, Almería)

17 octubre 2019

At the beginning of October, the EEZ-CSIC team, with the support of an INFOCA person (CMAOT), carried out the phytovolume sampling of the vegetation, coinciding with the entry of the cattle into the grazing area (only 3 had grazed days). The data of this sampling will be compared with those that will be taken at the time of the departure of the cattle (over the month of December 2019) to be able to assess the ability of the livestock to control the regrowth of shrub vegetation. Two methodologies were used: 1) Line-intercept, where the length intercepted by an individual, the species, the height height and the consumption rate were recorded along a 20 m transect.

2) Trendy height measurement by species in subplots of 1 m 2. A total of 12 transects were evaluated (4 in the burned area in autumn and grazed, 4 in the burned area in autumn and not grazed and 4 in the burned area in spring and grazing) and 96 subplots of 1 m 2 (32 for each of the aforementioned areas).

In addition it was observed that the regrowth capacity of many species, some of which showed a very remarkable development (Photos 5 and 6), as well as that there were species widely consumed by cattle such as Helichtotrichon filifolium (Photo 7).
