On 16th November, a drone flight was made over the Navarra pilot plot in Roncesvalles scheduled within the actions of the Interreg Sudoe project “Open2preserve.” The images will serve to measure the bush mass and complement the description of the vegetation and of the effects of the burns prescribed before the actions implicit in the project.

With these actions and studies, the Open2preserve project for “Sustainable Management for the Preservation of Open Mountains Spaces” seeks to reduce the risk of fires and to assess the mountain pastures, and increase biodiversity within these areas. Led by the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), it is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and will be executed during the next three years. INTIA participates and collaborates in the project within the framework of the Agreement with the Departament of Rural Development, Environment and Local Administration of the Government of Navarra for the fostering of R&D&i in the agrarian field. The project started in 2018 and in late September the first “Transnational Open2preserve Workshop” took place in Orreaga / Roncesvalles (Navarra), which was attended by 38 representatives from the 13 European partner entities. This meeting served to plan the eight pilot experiences that will be undertaken with indigenous ovine and equine livestock in spaces with high natural value in the SUDOE region which includes the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and southern France.

Climate change and the change in land use are pushing environmental technicians and public administrations to revise and update natural heritage management models. This modernisation must be based on traditional knowledge and be based on the application of new technologies (drones, geolocation, Internet, GPS) that facilitate management and monitoring work. OPEN2PRESERVE is a project in which 13 European entities participate from Spain, France and Portugal and which seeks the preservation of open mountains spaces of special interest and natural value. They are landscapes that have over the centuries been preserved in a patchwork thanks to the existence of domestic and wild herbivores.

Its objective is specifically to guarantee the preservation of the ecosystem services and ecological quality of open mountains spaces through:

• The creation of a management model for open mountain spaces with high value that is sustainable, transferrable and of common use for the SUDOE region.
• Ensuring the feasibility of the management model in the long term through the identification of innovative economic assessment solutions.
