Training future researchers – Informative video

19 noviembre 2019

During the past school year from the UPNA group of open2preserve we participated in an educational experience with the aim of promoting scientific vocations to girls between 12 and 15 years old (2nd and 4th of ESO). In this educational project funded by the Department of Education of the Government of Navarra we involve a total of 12 girls belonging to four schools, 3 girls per school. Bringing our work as environmental scientists to girls, we sought to arouse their interest in this discipline and that they themselves transmitted their experience to other school children.

The girls participated in two real research projects during the 2018-2019 academic year: 1) Global change and recovery of open spaces in mosaic for the prevention of
fires in densely scrubbed areas, linked to this European Open2preserve project, and 2) Global change and loss of biodiversity in mountain pastures due to competition and expansion of perennial grasses. We tutor girls throughout the development of the projects: in fieldwork sessions in the ZEC Roncesvalles – Selva de Irati (Natura 2000 Network), in scientific sessions in UPNA and in active learning activities in schools .
The girls presented the works to their classmates and to students of higher courses at the end of the course, after the ordinary exams call. His classmates evaluated the oral presentations through a common rubric for all schools. The overall satisfaction of the 264 students who completed the rubric ranged between 8.1 and 9.0 points out of 10.
